Magic and wonder hide in unexpected places — a leftover piece of ginger, a wrinkled potato left too long in its bag, a humdrum kitchen spice rack. In Don't Throw It, Grow It! Deborah Peterson reveals the hidden possibilities in everyday foods.

Peterson, former president of the American Pit Gardening Society, shows how common kitchen staples — pits, nuts, beans, seeds, and tubers — can be coaxed into lush, vibrant houseplants that are as attractive as they are fascinating. With Peterson's help, a sweet potato turns into a blooming vine; chickpeas transform into cheery hanging baskets; the humble beet becomes a dramatic centerpiece; and gingerroot grows into a 3-foot, bamboo-like stalk. In some cases the transformation can happen overnight!

Don't Throw It, Grow It! offers growing instructions for over 50 plants in four broad categories — kitchen vegetables; fruits and nuts; herbs and spices; and more exotic plants from ethnic markets. The book is enhanced with beautiful illustrations, and its at-a-glance format makes it a quick and easy reference. Tomcats spray urine as a means of chemical transportation and to mark their territory. This activity, which may be under taken by both entire and castrated males, should be differentiated from normal micturition and abnormal excretion linked with Urinary Tract Infections. When spraying, a cat holds its rump high with the tail erect and the tip of the tail quivers. Treading movements are also often seen as the spray, regularly about 1 ml, is sent back onto a vertical outside in short jets. Spraying indoors may be triggered by the presence of rival cats, collective upheaval (including home decoration) or the loss of human or animal companions.

Castration of entire males regularly diminishes or stops spraying and makes the urine less pungent smelling. It is, however, not universally effective; rates of effectiveness have been reported to be around 78%. The supervision of progestagens is sometimes efficient in both entire and neutered cats. Medication can be given intermittently or continuously. The mode of operation is plan to be through negative feedback on the hypothalamus and through calming effects in the cerebral cortex. The use of sedative or psychoactive drugs may also be of help in the short term, while environmental and behavior modification are introduced.

Cats Throwing Up

Cat owners should be discouraged from punishing the tomcat in any way after spraying, since this can exacerbate the situation. On the other hand, if the cat can be caught in the act, direct punishment (a jet of water from a water pistol) or a suitable object that, when thrown, physically disrupts the behavior, can be very effective. Cats caught spraying can also be deterred by an unexpected noise, such as that produced by an alarm or throwing a bunch of keys for example.

Forgotten Dog's Christmas

Here's a great poem that I thought I would pass on... Merry Christmas! –Kim

A Forgotten Dog's Christmas

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds
With no thought of the dog filling their head.

And mamma in her 'kerchief and I in my cap
Knew he was cold, but didn't care about that.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Figuring the dog was free of his chain and into the trash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below.

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But Santa Claus – with eyes full of tears.

He un-chained the dog, once so lively and quick –
Last year's Christmas present, now painfully thin and sick.

More rapid than eagles he called the dog's name
And the dog ran to him, despite all his pain.

"Now, DASHER! Now, DANCER! Now, PRANCER and VIXEN!
On, COMET! On CUPID! On, DONNER and BLITZEN!

To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!
Let's find this dog a home where he'll be loved by all."

I knew in an instant there would be no gifts this year,
For Santa Claus had made one thing quite clear.

The gift of a dog is not just for the season;
We had gotten the pup for all the wrong reasons.

In our haste to think of the kids a gift,
There was one important thing that we missed.

A dog should be family, and cared for the same;
You don't give a gift, then put it on a chain.

And I heard him exclaim as he rode out of sight,
"You weren't given a gift! You were given a LIFE!"

The Truth About Corn in Dog Food

To contact us Click HERE

Some insist corn is a nutritious dog food ingredient… while others denounce it as nothing more than a problematic cereal grain.
So, what should you believe? What’s thetruth about corn in dog food?

Is it good? Or is it bad?

Well, that depends on whom you ask.
In general, anxieties expressed over the use of corn in dog food seem to come from consumers… pet owners, breeders and the like.

Whereas the “Corn is Great” crowd appears to include those who have something to gain from making or selling products made with this controversial grain.

Myths About Corn Promoted
by the Pet Food Industry

Makers and sellers of corn-based foods insist the negative stories about corn are simply unsubstantiated myths and rumors spread around the Internet by simple-minded consumers.
The truth is, the pet food industry itself is guilty of disseminating its own self-serving and myth-based distortions, too.
In fact, most of the exaggerated claims extolling the virtues of corn actually originate within the pet food industry and are unwittingly propagated by naive and well-meaning pet owners.
Here are some of the most enduring myths about corn promoted by makers and sellers of corn-based dog foods.

Myth #1Corn Has a Low Glycemic Index

The glycemic index is a way of measuring the tendency of a specific food to raise the blood sugar level of an animal. The higher the index, the greater the risk of an unhealthy rise in blood sugar.
Here are the actual glycemic index figures for a few common dog food grains…
  • Corn meal (69)
  • Brown rice (55)
  • Corn (53)
  • Oatmeal (49)
  • Wheat (41)
  • Barley (25)

Compared to most other cereal grains used for making dog food, corn does not have a low glycemic index.

Myth #2 Corn Does Not Cause Allergies

Cheerleaders for corn-based products like to point out that corn is one of the least allergenic ingredients in dog food.
And according to some studies, that is probably true. One report found the incidence of corn allergy to be only 14%.And another places corn at just 3% of all allergies.
Yet to be fair, other reports caution readers not to place excessive value on the accuracy of these studies due to the notable difficulty in confirming the precise incidence of food allergies in dogs.

In any case, although it may not be a common food allergen, corn still cannot be completely excused as a potential cause.
When searching the Internet for these studies, it’s hard not to notice the thousands of legitimate reports by owners, breeders, forums and veterinary sites reporting corn and other cereal grains as a likely cause of their dogs’ allergies.
And then there’s the (very real) issue of cereal grain quality.
In many cases, problems aren’t so much a matter of allergies to the corn itself but rather to undetected contaminants within that grain.
It’s not unusual to find storage mites, their droppings and expired carcasses in bulk lots of feed grains6. And all of these are known to be notable canine allergens.
So, for these reasons (and until proven otherwise), we believe corn should still be considered a reasonable suspect when investigating the cause of any food-related canine allergy.

Myth #3 Corn Is Highly Digestible

As a whole grain, corn is not easily digestible. Unless the kernel is first refined into a meal or a flour (and then cooked), corn can be very difficult for a dog to digest.
As a matter of fact, corn (and other grains) are only digestible to the extent to which they’re processed.
That’s why even though the grain may be listed as “whole” on a pet food label, it’s nearly always first ground before being cooked into kibble.
And the finer it’s ground, the more digestible corn will be. But also, the higher its glycemic index.
However, to the uninformed, the pet food industry’s claim that corn is “99% digestible” can be misleading. It’s easy to innocently take that statement to mean corn has a high nutritional value, too.
Unfortunately, as you’ll see, that is simply not the case.

Myth #4 Corn Has a High Biological Value

There’s nothing unique enough about corn’s content that makes it a nutritional standout… nothing that can’t be found in, or converted from, some other ingredient. Not even protein.
And to those who insist the protein content of a corn kernel has some important biological value we present the following table…Dog Food Ingredients and Their Biological ValueWhen it comes to its protein usability, corn has a measurably lower biological value.

Myth #5Corn Is Rich in Vitamins and Minerals

Fans of corn also like to claim the grain is high in anti-oxidants and minerals.High in anti-oxidants and minerals? Compared to what?Aside from its energy content, corn’s nutritional completeness is certainly not exceptional. The Nutrient Balance Completeness Score is a measure of how complete a food is with respect to vitamin, mineral and dietary fiber content. The higher the score of a food, the more complete its nutrients.According to information from the USDA’s National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, theCompleteness Score for corn and a number of other common ingredients are listed here in increasing nutritional value
  • Brown rice (33)
  • Corn (34)
  • Barley (36)
  • Oats (43)
  • Quinoa (45)
  • Wheat (48)
  • Potato (51)
  • Peas (53)
  • Sweet potato (55)
  • Spinach (91)
So, when it comes to judging its vitamin and mineral content, corn is mostly unremarkable.

Myth #6Corn Is a Superior Source of Energy

Some pet food manufacturers like to point out that corn is a better source of energy – especially for working animals – than meat. However, science proves this to be yet another myth.Consumers shouldn’t favor a dog food because “protein” is the first ingredient. They should choose a dog food because meat is the first ingredient. That’s because meat doesn’t just contain protein – it also contains fat.Corn is mostly fat free. It’s a carbohydrate. From a scientific standpoint (and not marketing hype), here’s the actual energy scorecard for each of the 3 macronutrients9 found in all food:Nutrient Calories per GramThe following caloric information is based upon the USDA’s National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference Dog Food Ingredient Calories per GramOunce-for-ounce, science proves meat contains significantly more energy than corn.

The Truth About Corn

So, why is corn used so abundantly in the manufacture of today’s commercial dog foods?Well, as you’ve just seen, surely not because it could be considered more nutritious. Then, could corn be “more natural”?When you study a dog’s natural ancestral history, you won’t find any mention of corn. That is, until the year 1956. For that was the year indelibly marked by the invention of kibble. So, why did the introduction of kibble bring with it such a dramaticrise in the use of corn in making dog food? What suddenly made carbohydrates (like corn, grains and potatoes) so popular with the pet food industry? The truth is…
  • Carbohydrates are cheap
  • Carbohydrates are vital to the kibbling process
You won’t find corn in commercial dog food because it contributes some unique nutritional property. No, it’s there simply because it supplies cheap calories to the product. And starchy carbohydrates play a critical role in a process known asgelatinization… which is absolutely crucial to the workings of kibble machinery. As proof, how often do you find corn in a raw or canned dog food?

The Bottom Line

In a nutshell, corn makes any pet food you find it in less expensive to produce. And it does this by diluting a recipe’s more costly meat ingredients.Kibble is simply inexpensive fast food for dogs. And that’s OK. Because corn doesn’t just save money for manufacturers. It also makes dog food more affordable for pet owners, too. However, to advertise that corn is included in commercial dog food primarily for its nutritional benefits is misleading — and a grossmisrepresentation of the facts. It may be OK for a dog food to contain corn. However, it’s not OK for a manufacturer to make such outrageous claims about this rather ordinary cereal grain in a deceptive attempt to mislead consumers and to exaggerate its true nutritional value.

Dog owners and their pets may exchange harmful mouth bacteria that can cause gum disease and tooth decay in both humans and canines, according to a report in Archives of Oral Biology. Previous research has shown people can transmit oral bacteria to children through close daily contact. But few studies have looked at the bacteria exchanged between people and their pets.
About 5% of canines get dental caries, which includes tooth decay and cavities. But rates of periodontitis, an inflammatory mouth disease, in dogs have been reported to range from 50% to 70%.
Researchers late last year worked with dog owners in Japan to assess the prevalence of 10 bacteria that are associated with periodontitis in people. They also analyzed an oral microbe commonly found in dogs but not humans. Study participants were 81 members of 64 families that owned 66 dogs of various breeds and ages. Participants were divided into three groups: Most of the people had a high degree of contact with dogs while the others had little or no contact with dogs.

Analysis of dental plaque found all 10 of the human bacteria in dogs and humans. The most common—Tannerella forsythia, Porphyromonas gulae, and Campylobacter rectus—were detected in significantly higher levels in dogs than owners. As many as a quarter of the dogs and owners with close contact shared Eikenella corrodens bacteria. Periodontal bacteria were more prevalent in high-contact relationships and in older dogs.

P. gulae, rarely detected in humans, was found in 13 owners and their dogs, including two with low-contact relationships. This finding suggests bacteria can be transmitted from dogs to humans even with low contact, researchers said.
Caveat: Data about pre-existing periodontitis in dogs and owners wasn't available.
Visual clutter: A study of people with mild memory loss found they struggled to distinguish between similar-looking objects, suggesting memory and certain forms of perception may be linked in the brain, says a report in Hippocampus. Traditionally, the medial temporal lobe region of the brain has been thought to control long-term memory but not other cognitive functions. This study suggests that damage to a part of the medial temporal lobe called the perirhinal cortex affects both memory and perception.
A U.S.-Canadian research team administered a series of tests requiring complex perceptual processing, a key function of the perirhinal cortex region, to three groups of older adults. These included seven people with mild cognitive impairment, 10 at risk for such impairment and 19 healthy controls.
Subjects had to decide if pairs of objects shown on a screen were matched or not matched. In 88 trials, the objects resembled amoeba-like blobs with similar shapes, colors and patterned sections. In 88 other trials, the differences between the objects were more distinct, for example a pail paired with a chili pepper and a TV with a plant.
Compared with the control group, participants with mild cognitive impairment and those at risk for impairment had great difficulty distinguishing objects with similar visual features. Those participants' performance improved when they could discriminate between the objects' features more easily.
The researchers suggested that reducing visual clutter—for example, making buttons on a telephone of varying shapes and sizes—might make routine tasks easier for people with memory problems.
Caveat: As none of the subjects underwent MRI brain scans, the study couldn't identify the area of the perirhinal cortex involved in memory loss and impaired objection perception, researchers said.
Heart health: Cardiovascular risk factors, including body weight, cholesterol and arterial plaque, were significantly reduced in mice that were fed drinking water containing watermelon juice compared with controls, according to a study in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry. Previous research indicated that citrulline, a key compound in watermelons, may have blood-pressure lowering properties.
In this 13-week study, Purdue University scientists tested citrulline on mice genetically altered to develop high cholesterol. One group had unlimited access to drinking water containing 2% watermelon extract. Citrulline constituted 20% to 30% of the extract. Control mice received water without watermelon extract. Both groups ate a high-fat diet for 12 of the 13 weeks.
All mice gained about 1.8 grams per week for seven weeks after which weekly weight gain slowed to 1.1 grams in watermelon-extract mice compared with 1.6 grams in controls. Watermelon-extract mice also had significantly reduced cholesterol levels, body fat and aortic plaque, and significantly increased levels of interleukin-10, an anti-inflammatory compound, tests showed. No blood-pressure differences were recorded. Citrulline may decrease systemic inflammation associated with atherosclerosis, researchers said.
Caveat: The blood-pressure findings aren't explained in the findings, researchers said. Citrulline's effects on human cardiovascular health haven't been tested.
Pain culture: A study of U.S. and Dutch patients who had routine ankle surgery found that more Americans used strong narcotics for postoperative pain, but patients in both countries managed pain better with nonnarcotic drugs, according to a report in the journal Injury. Previous research found that anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen controlled pain more effectively than narcotics, or opioids, following cardiac and hip-replacement operations.
In this study, a U.S.-Dutch research team compared postoperative pain, pain-medication use and pain relief in 30 U.S. and 30 Dutch patients, ages 18 to 88, who underwent surgery for a fractured ankle from 2007 to 2009. Pain and pain relief were rated on the first day after surgery and when stitches were removed two weeks later. All medications used in and out of hospital were recorded.
On the first day after surgery, 100% of U.S. patients took opioid medications, mostly oxycodone, and 57% also took non-opioid drugs such as acetaminophen. Among Dutch patients, 67% used opioids, mostly tramadol, on the first postoperative day and 100% took non-opioid drugs, usually acetaminophen or paracetamol. At suture removal, 70% of U.S. patients took strong opioids and 13% of Dutch patients took weak opioids. Cultural differences may affect how patients perceive and cope with pain, researchers said.
Caveat: The influence of psychological factors on pain perception and tolerance wasn't assessed. In the U.S., tramadol wouldn't be considered in the same class of opioid medications as oxycodone, researchers said. The study was small and the findings may be relevant only in the Netherlands and U.S., they said.
Lymphedema: The removal of lymph nodes during breast-cancer surgery often leads to chronic swelling of the arm, a painful and disfiguring condition known as lymphedema. There is no cure for lymphedema but a report in the journal Angiogenesis suggests a naturally occurring protein, which is known for inducing inflammation, may form the foundation of an effective new treatment option.
A team of Southern California scientists conducted a series of experiments with interleukin-8 (IL-8), a protein that has been shown to stimulate the growth of new lymphatic vessels and nodes, a process called lymphangiogenesis. The vessel growth, however, occurs indirectly during inflammation, by activating immune cells to secrete factors that prompt lymphangiogenesis, they said.
To activate lymphangiogenesis directly, in the absence of inflammation, scientists created genetically modified mice that secreted a constant level of IL-8 in their skin. Lymphedema was induced in the modified mice and a normal control group by surgically obstructing lymphatic networks through the tail.
Postoperative swelling was initially similar in both groups but started to subside in modified mice after a week, whereas lymphedema was still prominent in controls at four weeks, results showed. Analysis of lymphatic vessels in the tails of both groups indicated vessel regeneration was more pronounced in modified mice. No signs of inflammation were detected.
Caveat: Interleukin-8 hasn't been tested in human studies of lymphedema.

Kick the Dog

"I'm getting five hundred phone calls a day asking what the hell is going on, that our police force is brutalizing women and misplacing children. Christ, all this picture needs now is for someone to kick a puppy for the cameras."
A character performs an act so casually cruel or evil that you know that they are scum, incompatible with the moral rules of the series that they're in. This is a signal to the audience that it's okay to dislike the character. In short, dog-kicking is a sure sign that the writers want the audience to be wary of this character, even if he is nominally one of the good guys.

What separates this trope from other evil or cruel acts is that not only is the act bad, it's also pointless as far as the plot goes. It is the fact that it had no other point than to be evil, that puts them on the bad side of the Rule of Empathy.
Dog-kickings can be verbal as well, when a line of dialogue is used to shock the audience with its sheer repugnance. If it's uttered in the presence of the hero in an action series, he'll echo the audience's thoughts and tell the villain "You're Insane!"
This trope isn't about literal dog-kicking. It's any act or statement that shows the character's meanness or out-and-out evil, such as a boss demanding an employee come to work during Christmas when the employee's kid is in the hospital, or stealing from a blind beggar's coin dish, or a vicious No-Holds-Barred Beatdown on the hero or one of his True Companions or Protectorate. A Politically Incorrect Villain can kick the dog by showing gratuitous racism, sexism, homophobia, etc... or some combination of such non-PC traits. If the event happened off screen in the past, just have your villain fondly recall the incident and make it clear they enjoyed it and bingo, mission accomplished.
If an animal is used, however, a dog is usually the pet of choice, partly out of connotations of blind loyalty, partly from tradition. Arguably, however, substituting a cat can be even more shocking. After all, even bad guys like cats. So, the argument goes, if someone goes out of his way to harm one, they must really be a bastard.
This trope is common in horror-based Monster of the Week shows, often to set up the Asshole Victim for the Karmic Twist Ending. Anthologies are especially prone to this, as they have to set up their villains really quickly, since they only have one episode to tell their story. This can be played up by having the very same kick of cruelty be the cause of their downfall. At the very least, it is designed to let you know who is going to lose at the end. The opposite of Karma Houdini.
In cartoons, someone who does this can be legally harassed by Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, the Warner Brothers and their Sister Dot, etc. The Screwy Squirrel, however, doesn't need one of these.
One possible origin of the trope name comes from Westerns, where three bandits would ride into the town, one would shoot the Sheriff, one would shoot the Deputy, and one, just to prove he was also a bad guy, would Kick the Dog.
If what is supposed to be a character's Kick the Dog moment is excessively horrible, cruel, or otherwise despicable enough to make an audience lose all sympathy for him, then he's crossed the Moral Event Horizon, rather than kicking the dog if he's not on the other side of it already. If the Dog in question is someone the character cares about and discovers Being Evil Sucks, then they've Kicked The Wrong Dog and might be in time to avoid a Face Heel Turn. If the dog belonged to a minion, expect it to help cause a Mook Face Turn because Even Mooks Have Loved Ones. On occasions, if karma works in the dog's favor, he'll manage to get a last laugh. On even rarer occasions, after being pushed around too many times, the dog may decide to plan against the Big Bad for his own ambitions, becauseBeing Tortured Makes You Evil. When the dog-kicking is done in a way that (usually inadvertently) increases sympathy for the villain, it becomes Strawman Has a Point.
A more benign, and more comedic, form of this shows the immorality of the villain by having them cheat at Solitaire.
Compare with Cant Get Away With Nuthin, And Your Little Dog Too, Kick Them While They Are Down, The Dog Bites Back, Threw My Bike on the Roof, I Will Punish Your Friend for Your Failure. See "If You're So Evil, Eat This Kitten" for when bad guys do a Kick the Dog test to make sure undercover heroes are really evil.
Contrast Pet the Dog (proving you're good) and Adopt the Dog (going from Neutral to Good).
Not to be confused with Shoot the Dog. (That's what you do when Old Yeller gets rabies.)
